Peter joined PhysioFunction two years ago after suffering a debilitating stroke on November 21, 2021. When he first came to PhysioFunction, he had no movement on his left side and experienced significant muscle pain and joint discomfort due to muscle tightness and difficulty moving. Peter required a hoist and the assistance of two people to transfer from his bed to a wheelchair.
Peter's initial goals were realistic and essential for improving his quality of life. He aimed to stand independently and get into a normal car, which would significantly ease his transportation to various places.
Under the weekly guidance of his Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist, Charlie North, Peter has made remarkable strides in his recovery. Two years of dedicated physiotherapy have transformed Peter’s capabilities:
- Mobility:
Peter now walks with minimal support using a Topro Gutter rollator, a significant improvement from his initial state of immobility.
- Transfers:
He has progressed from requiring a hoist to being able to stand and pivot with the support of one person or using a standing frame (Molift) for transfers at home.
- Independence:
Peter has transitioned from needing a hospital bed to sleeping in his own bed, reflecting his regained autonomy and mobility.
Peter’s biggest achievements since starting at PhysioFunction include walking the length of the clinic with a walker and lifting his left leg, which he couldn't do before.
Peter's motivation in his sessions has been a key factor in exceeding his initial goals. His dedication to his recovery has not only enabled him to meet but also surpass his expectations. He continues to set new goals, including walking at home with a Gutter frame supported by his family, and ultimately, he aims to return to playing bowls, a game he loves.
Peter’s journey has taught him valuable lessons, which he shares with other stroke survivors: "Seek help ASAP, don’t sit about. You’ve got to do it for yourself." His experience with the NHS was not what he had hoped for, leading him to find help at PhysioFunction.
Peter highly recommends PhysioFunction for its friendly atmosphere and affordable services. He shares a strong rapport with his therapist, Charlie, who has significantly boosted his confidence. Peter says, "Charlie has given me a lot of confidence since coming here. I feel more confident getting in and out of bed."
Peter's wife attests to his incredible progress: "He has come a long way since coming to PhysioFunction." She recalls the early days post-stroke when they used a hoist for Peter and managed many tasks for him. Now, thanks to the specialist physiotherapy he receives, Peter is back in his own bed and continues to gain independence.
Peter's story highlights the transformative power of dedicated physiotherapy and the importance of seeking the right help. His journey from total dependence to walking with minimal support showcases the potential for recovery with the right motivation and professional guidance. Peter's ongoing progress and future goals serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
