It is MND Awareness Month, and we are encouraging people to get involved and raise awareness and understanding of this life limiting condition that affects people of all ages across the world.

What is Motor Neuron Disease (MND)?

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a group of neurological disorders that affect the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. These cells control the movement of muscles throughout the body, including those used for breathing, speaking, swallowing, and walking. MND is a progressive condition that worsens over time, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis.

There are various types of MND which include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), and bulbar onset MND. The most common type of MND is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), resulting in approximately 60% – 70% diagnosis.

What is the causes of Motor Neuron Disease (MND)?

The exact cause of MND is not yet known although researchers believe that it may be caused by genetic factors and environmental factors (exposure to chemicals etc). There is currently no cure for MND but there are treatments available that can help slow down the progression of symptoms and improve quality of life for people.

What is common symptoms of MND?

Although it depends on what type of MND you have, a few of the main symptoms of may include muscle weakness, muscle stiffness, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, muscle twitches, cramps, and weight loss.

What are the treatment options for MND?
