What is Motor Neurone Disease?

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease affecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. The body’s communication system to the muscles therefore gradually stops working – causing muscle weakness and reduced function.

The most common type of MND is Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and around 8 in 10 individuals with MND, have this type.

The main aspect of ALS-MND is muscle weakness, which is usually mild at first, but gradually worsens over time. Symptoms tend to start in the hands and arms or feet and legs. Other symptoms include speech becoming slurred, change in voice quality, difficulty swallowing, muscle cramps, tiredness, twitching of weakened muscles (fasciculation) and jerking of an arm or leg whilst you rest.

However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone, and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. There is currently no cure for MND, however, Neurological Physiotherapy can help keep you mobile, maintain your quality of life and maximise your independence for as long as possible.
